SOLU KHUMBU TO HILE

Duration 12 Days
Difficulty Medium to hard
Maximum Elevation 3349m
Permit cost -
Season October April
Hotels Primitive
Summary The Original route or the Everest Explorers. Climb over several ridges through shrpa and Rai Villages to the Arun Valley at 300m elevation. Basic food and accommodation available.

This section describes an alternative to the Jiri to Everest base camp trek., though I have shown it as a route from Solu Khambe (the Mt Everest region) to Hile, you can also begin at Hile and use it as an approach route to the Everest region. HW Tilman, the first foreign visitor to Everest base camp, used this route in 1950 and described it in some detail in Nepal Himalayan.
By walking from Jiri to Everest, and then walking to Hile, you can make a rewarding 32 day trek. Walking to Hile avoids the flight complications at Lukla and lends a sense of continuity to the reek that you will not feel if you fly back form Lukal.
Though it's possible to make this walk as a lodge trek, the facilities do not resemble those of the Everest region. The facilities do not resemble those of the Everest region. The first six days, from Lukal to Phedi, are through country that sees few foreign travelers, so the hotels are small and the stocks of beer, Coke and other goodies are meager. In the Irkhuwa and Arun valleys the teahouses cater primarily to locals, and the food is limited to dal bhat and biscuits.

JUGAL HIMAL

Duration 13 days
Difficulty Medium
Maximum Elevation 3800m
Permit cost :-
Season October to November, March to April
Hotels None
Summary An- off- the-beaten-track trek close to Kanthmandu. Climb through forests to high alpine. No food or accommodation.

To the north-east of Kathmandu lies a chain of peaks called Jugal Himal, Which includes Dorje Lakpa (6966m), Madiya (6257m) and Phurbi Chhyachu (6637m). From the south it is an easily accessible region, although it requires a long uphill climb. Just above Dolalghat on the Kodari road there is a road to the large bazaar of Chautaara (1410m). The trek described here climbs form Chautaara to a ridge, which it then follows north to Panch Pokhari ('Five lakes') at 3600m. From Panch Pokhari, trails lead to Tarke Gyang in Healmbu and then back down the ridge through Sermathang to Panchkal on the Kodari road. Several other routes described in this chapter also l3ead back to Kathmandu from Tarke Gyang.
Another trail form Chautaara descends to the Balephi Khola, the follows a ridge to Bhairav Kund, a holy lake at 3500m. You can return form there to Taropani on the Kodari road or make a circuit around the head of Balephi Khola vall3ey to Panch Pokhari and join the route described here.
This is a remote and unfrequented region, despite its proximity to Kathmandu. Treks in this area involve a lot of climbing on arrow trails. There are few village and no hotels on this route and water is very scarce on the ridge.

HELAMBU CIRECUIT

Duration 7 Days
Difficulty Easy to Medium
Maximum Elevation 3490m
Permit cost -
Season October April
Hotels Very Good
Summary The closest trek to kathmandu offers an easy loop through villages of varied ethnic makeup.

This is the description of a seven day trek that makes a circuit of the Helambu region. The easiest starting point for this trek is Sundarijal because of its proximity to Kathamandu. You can make the trek in either direction, because it closes a loop from Pati Bahnjyang, the first night stop of the trek. The preferred route is clockwise as I have described here; first visiting the high ridge to the west of Helambu Valley, then heading ot Tarke Gyang and descending the Malemchi Khaola before climbing back to Pati Bhanjyang. There are all kinds of other possible variations, including a direct route to Tarke Gyang form Pati Bhanjyang, then down the ridge througn Sermathang, ending at Panchkal.

Namche Bazaar to Gokyo
Duration 9 day
Difficulty Medium to hard
Maximum elevation 5381 m
Permit cost -
Season October to December, February to May.
Hotels Good
Summary A high-altitude trek to a valley east of Everest base camp. Excellent views of Everest, small lodges on the entire route and usually less crowded than the base camp trek.
The trek to Gokyo offers an alternative to the traditional trek to Everest base camp. From Gokyo, more of Everest itself is visible, though from a slightly greater distance, than form Kala Pattar above Gorak Shep, The mountains are more spectacular, the Ngozumpa Glacier is the largest in the Nepal Himalayan, and from a ridge above Gokyo, four 800m peaks ( Cho Oyu, Everest, Lhotse and Makalu) are visible at once The view of the tremendous ice ridge between Cho Oyu and Gyachung Kang (7922m) is one of the most dramatic panoramas in Khumbu. There are many options for additional exploration and hig-altitude walking, including the crossing of Cho La, a 5420m-high pass into Khumbu.
Namche Bazaar to Thami

Duration 2 day
Difficulty Medium
Maximum elevation 3750 m
Permit cost US$5 per week plus Rs 650
Season October to May.
Hotels Good
Summary A short side trip to a more traditional Sherpa village. Excellent mountain views.
Thami lies at an elevation of 3750m, near the foot of a large valley to the west of Namche Bazaar. This I s the departure point for crossing Tesi Lapcha, the 5755m pass into the Rolwaling Valley. Only experienced, wellequipped and well-informed parties should attempt Tesi Lapcha because frequent rock falls near the pass present a very dangerous complication.
If you are in good shape and well acclimatized, it is possible to make the rtip to Thami and back to Namche Bazaar in a single day, but it's a long , hard day, so it's better to spend a night in Thami to see the peaks in the clear morning. This side trip provides a good acclimatization day before proceeding to higher elevations.

Barahbise to Shivalaya

Barahbise to Shivalaya
Duration 6 day
Difficulty Medium
Maximum elevation 3320 m
Permit cost US$5 per week
Season October to May.
Hotels Minimal
Summary An off-the beaten-track route through both highland and lowland villages that bypasses the road to Jiri. Very few lodges, so you'll need to arrange a camping trek.
It takes a bit of the continuity out of the Everest trek when you drive all the way to Jiri. The following route from Barahbise to Shivalaya avoids the Jiri road entirely, passing through country that trekkers
